GG9: Great Running, Great Memories
Steve M-- Imagine spending 5 days with old friends and making new ones from all over the world. Now image doing this while running in your preferred distance race while having many of these friends cheering you on or engaging in friendly yet fierce competition with them. Imagine hanging out after the races over dinner and drinks. Now imagine doing this every few years. Steve Monroney, Andrew Sturner, Ben Cowan, and Mark Thompson all experienced this without imagining it this summer at the 9th installment of the Gay Game in Cleveland Ohio. Yes the world came to Cleveland and they were not disappointed. Steve was very pleased to be joined by other Colorado athletes that were newcomers to the games, and what a games it was at the track meet and road races. Ben cruised to a win and PB in the half marathon! Andrew wowed the crowd at the track with a 15:15 5000 m run and 4:11 1500m run, instantly gaining fame with many including several voluptuous Germanic sprinters. Steve ran 3 distance races after sprinting like a mad man in the 4 x 100 on day 1 of the meet; and he also won the 5000m as Colorado swept both heats. But what is even better is young french Damien gained just as much fame coming in last in the Decathalon but giving it everything he had. What they all had in common…they ran (or threw or jumped or cheered) their best on competition day under whatever conditions existed in their mind, body and spirit. Come join them in 4 years in Paris as we all play at GG10 embodying the spirit of the games: Participation, Inclusion and Personal Best.
